FingerPaints Enchanted Mermaid Collection

Hi, you guys! I'm writing this as I'm watching The Strain (on FX) with my husband. It's a gory vampire tv show, and I'm totally chicken when it comes to anything scary, so I'm half hiding behind my laptop as it's on lol.

Today, I've got a collection with an interesting concept to show you. The FingerPaints Enchanted Mermaid Collection is made up of four shimmery shades with fish scale textures. When I first heard of this, I was so excited. The idea sounded amazing and I'm always up for trying a new texture, especially one with a novel concept. But it didn't quite turn out the way I had thought. You can see for yourself...

Sea Temptress
Sea Temptress is a pearly white metallic with opalescent shimmers and textured fish scale hex glitters. I did three coats for the swatches.

Underwater Enchantress
Underwater Enchantress is a sage/olive green metallic with shimmers and textured fish scale hex glitters. I did two coats for the swatches.

Sailor's Lure
Sailor's Lure is a medium periwinkle blue metallic with shimmers that flash purple and textured fish scale hex glitters. I did two coats for the swatches.

Tails of Love
Tails of Love is a mermaid teal metallic with shimmers and textured fish scale hex glitters. I did two coats for the swatches.

The difference between the texture of this collection and your typical texture polishes is that these lack the gritty sand particles that fill in and evenly distribute that texture across the nails. Without it, the glitters tend to clump together, getting stuck haphazardly onto the nails and each other. It makes the finish look lumpy and messy.

I have to give kudos to FingerPaints for trying something new. Having the texture glitters look like fish scales is a good concept in theory. I'm just not sure the vision translated into the end product. It's a shame because the colors are all stunning. If only they had stopped at that, or had gone all out with textures and added the gritty particles, I think the result would have been amazing.

What do you think of this collection and the fish scale textures? Are you impressed or disappointed? Let me know in the comments below. :)

You can find the Enchanted Mermaid shades at Sally Beauty stores and SallyBeauty.com for $5.49 for each 0.5 fl oz bottle.

  1. I don't know about the mermaid-y effect either... but tails of love is super duper pretty!!

    1. I think that teal color is gorgeous too! So shimmery and glowy. :)

  2. This collection gave me pause when I saw it at Sally Beauty, especially the green and the blues, but when I saw they were textured I shied away. I have to say, Yun, your swatches of these are the nicest I've seen and I share your wish that they'd stopped at the colors and not included the textured element. These would also have been amazing as full coveraged microglitters a la China Glaze I'm Not Lion. I always enjoy your posts! :)

    1. Thanks so much, Liz! <3 Yea I'm doubly-sad because this would have been an amazing collection otherwise. The four colors are so pretty, and I'm just salivating thinking how they would look without the glitters or as fully textured colors lol.

  3. It is indeed a interesting finish, not really fish scaly no, I agree....
I'm not fond of textured polishes, but I love your swatches :)

    1. Thanks Maria! Yep they turned out more lumpy than mermaid scales unfortunately.

  4. Hi Yun, I am smitten with the colors and they look so beautiful on you. That being said, this is about all that is appealing to me - what a pitty that this collection came out sort of half finished only - didn't they test it I wonder? I am confused my the fishscale finish term I have to admit - to me that would mean that the glitter would be placed one next to the other or overlapping in a thin smooth way. I definitely would zave preferred those being regular polishes - no glitter - oh or imagine the beauty if it would be done like the Zoya Pixie glitters.... THAT would habe been cool too <3

    1. Hi Christine! Yep, I love the colors in this collection too, which is why I think it's an even bigger disappointment. It would have been amazing if they had kept it without the glitters or gone on to do a full texture. I'm salivating just thinking of it. But as it stands, it's too lumpy for me, even with the beautiful colors.

  5. Neat concept, poor execution. The color do look beautiful and I think they would be great with a little tweaking!

    1. The colors really are stunning, with all those beautiful shimmers. Too bad... a little change could have made these amazing.

  6. While the colors are gorgeous, I am not a fan of this particular type of texture. Great swatches though!

    1. Thanks Melissa! I feel the same. The colors are beautiful, but not so much the texture.

    1. Yep, there's definitely nothing else like it, so I do have to give them credit for trying something new. :)

  8. These remind me of the ChG Crinkle Chromes both in the somewhat incomplete execution and overall crowd reaction (and the fact that the colors themselves are so gorgeous). I think they're kind of cool! I keep saying that I really don't need any more texture polishes despite the fact that it does look to be a trend with some serious staying power... I managed to resist these (mostly because Sally's isn't terribly convenient). I will say that sometimes a picture is worth the experience of having something on your own nails and so I will happily ogle yours :) I'm kind of swooning over Underwater Enchantress and Sailor's Lure, to be honest with you, texture included (but then again, I do love Belugaria so there you have it ;) ).

    1. Hehe I thought you might like these. :) The colors are definitely stunning! I just wish the texture was more uniform. Now I understand why all the other texture polishes have the gritty particles in them, even the more glittery ones. It's to help keep everything uniform as it goes on the nails, which this one lacks. I don't see textures going anywhere either. That's fine by me cause I usually love textures. When they first came out, I thought we would just have a season or two with them, and here we are almost two years later. :)

  9. I really like the colours, but my head can't quite get around the lumpiness of the polishes on the nails. I think you did a great job swatching them though :)

    1. Thanks! Too bad for the lumpy-ness, but I really love the colors too. They're so shimmery and glowy, exactly my sort of shades.

  10. The colors themselves are very pretty... I wish they'd stopped there, or even just made these into traditional textures. I can't get past the impression that these are gloppy and half dry, despite knowing that the effect is intentional.

    1. Yep, same here! The shades are totally stunning, so it's double-sad that the texture isn't great.

  11. I'm not a fan of this experiment. I agree they should have stopped at gorgeous colours.

  12. Hmm, that's an interesting effect and I'm not entirely sure yet if I like it or not, but certainly looks different ;D

    1. It's definitely unique! It's fun to see brands try different effects, even if the result isn't great. :)

  13. Kind of reminds me of that weird black Lippmann glitter she came out with a few years a back. Just like that one, I think you have to play around with how you apply these. I'm thinking maybe just one coat over a darker creme shade and maybe dabbed on at that? IDK. That green & is super pretty though, so I may pick it up, just to try out.

    1. Good idea... I was wondering if I could have applied these differently so that they would be more even and dense (more mermaid-like). Maybe dabbing instead of using brush strokes would work better. I'm glad you like the green. I think all the colors themselves are very pretty. :)

    2. Yeah, all the colors are really pretty, but I do love my greens. ;-)

  15. I passed on ChG Crinkled Chromes, but did impulse buy FP Sailor's Lure. I actually really liked it! Only one of my nails turned out a little lumpy. The rest actually looked pretty good; I could see the mermaid texture they were going for, or like even bubbles. Sometimes you can't be sure until you see it for yourself....

    1. Oooh I'm glad you like it! Sailor's Lure is a particularly pretty blue, and I'm happy the texture is working out for you. Do you have any tricks to applying that made them less lumpy? :)

  16. I've seen them somewhere... I don't remember where and this person wasn't satisfied.
It really looks similar to fish scale. I like the blue, olive and teal one but I guess I wouldn't be truly satisfied with its finish.

    1. Yes exactly, the colors are beautiful, so it's a bummer the finish didn't turn out quite right.

  18. These look like a really odd finish :-| but yet there is something interesting about them. I not sure I'd really want to buy them though - I don't think I'd wear them.

    1. The resemblance to fish scales is there, so it's definitely an interesting finish. Too bad the final look is not quite as they had intended though.

  19. I agree with you... this was a good idea in theory but the execution didn't really work :( I can see how the glitters would clump together. To be honest though the only way I really think one could achieve the fish scale look is to do individual glitter placement which would be really really time consuming... I think the addition of regular sand glitter would just make it even lumpier personally

    1. Yep the execution just wasn't there, which is so sad because the colors are really lovely. If they had somehow successfully achieved the fish scale look, I think this collection would have been stunning.

I don't know about this collection. I do not really like the texture on it though I do like the mermaid inspiration.

    1. I listened to the first book in the series on CD and it was pretty good. Ron Perlman reads it and he does a decent job. Don't know if I'm going to read or listen to the other 2 books in the series yet, mostly because I'm listening and reading other stuff (Odd Thomas right now by Dean Koontz).

    2. I feel that the first few episodes of The Strain started really slowly, but it's really picking up the pace now. :) Yea I like the inspiration too, though the texture doesn't quite live up to that.

@auroragyps, the books seem really cool! I haven't read them yet cause I didn't want to spoil the show for myself haha. :)

    3. I get ya. I do tend to like the book versions better than film ones though. I haven't seen Game of Thrones yet, but I read the first 4 books, so I'm kind of hesitant. Tried watching The Walking Dead after reading the graphic novels and couldn't keep watching. The Dresden Files show had so many changes made to it from the the books, I couldn't stand it. Sigh, good thing I like to read. ;-)

  24. Definitely not a fan of these particular textures, but I will say that the white one really looks like a pearl, which is kind of cool. And the colors are really pretty.

  25. Definitely agree that while these colors are absolutely gorgeously stunning, the textured made me pass. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE, textured polishes, but only if the texture looks good. I think the crushed gem texture look from the Hammered Terra Cotta or Rockin' Renaissance polishes would look amazing in these polishes, or like someone else said the Zoya Pixie Dust look would look great in these colors or even just by themselves since the colors here are stunning, but those textures just made me pass on this collection completely.

    1. I love the colors too. It would be awesome if they released an un-texturized version of this collection in the future hehe, or they re-did the texture to be more uniform. I love texture polishes too, but this collection just wasn't to my taste either.
